Substation and Transmission Project Manager

FC Electric is hiring a Substation and Transmission Project Manager to deliver assigned substation, transmission line, and interconnection projects from engineering release through energization and closeout. You will own scope, schedule, cost, risk, quality, and client satisfaction, lead the cross-functional project team, and make the tradeoff decisions that keep projects on track when conditions change.

As the single point of accountability for each project, the Project Manager has the authority to match, including stop work authority. This is a remote-based role with travel up to 35 percent to project sites, rights of way, utilities, and vendors across the country.

What You Will Do

Project Delivery and Scheduling

• Deliver assigned substation and transmission projects to the approved scope, schedule, budget, and quality requirements.
• Build and maintain the integrated schedule across engineering, permitting, right of way, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and energization, and actively manage the critical path.
• Plan work sequences for stations and lines, including long lead equipment and material deliveries, outage and clearance windows, and utility milestones.

Permitting, Right of Way, and Access

• Work with land, right of way, and environmental partners so that permits, easements, and site access are in place before construction starts.
• Plan access roads, matting, laydown yards, and work areas that stay within environmental and landowner restrictions.
• Coordinate crossings of highways, railroads, waterways, and existing lines with the agencies and owners involved.

Cost, Risk, and Change

• Own the project budget, including labor, material, equipment, subcontracts, and contingency, and forecast cost to complete each period.
• Identify, quantify, and reduce project risk, including weather, terrain, outage, and permitting risk, and keep an active risk register with owners and dates.
• Document changed conditions, develop change orders, and negotiate them with the client.

Client and Utility Coordination

• Serve as the main FC Electric contact for the client, and manage expectations proactively.
• Coordinate with interconnecting utilities and transmission owners on design approval, witness testing, outage scheduling, and energization milestones.
• Work with substation and line construction crews, field leaders, and commissioning on constructability, sequencing, and resource needs.

Safety Leadership

• Make safety part of every project decision, and shape scope, schedule, and budget so that working safely is realistic, not just a goal.
• Use stop work authority, and back anyone else who uses it, without hesitation.
• Follow site safety rules during substation and right of way visits, and take part in incident reviews on assigned projects.

What You Need

• Bachelor of Science in engineering, construction management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and hands on experience.
• Six or more years managing substation, transmission line, or electric utility construction projects with full accountability for the outcome.
• Ability to build an integrated project schedule and manage the critical path.
• Ownership of project cost, including forecasting and variance explanation.
• Understanding of substation and transmission line design, construction, and commissioning sufficient to challenge the team constructively.
• Strong client facing communication and negotiation skills.
• Able to travel to project sites and rights of way and work safely around energized substations and transmission lines.

Preferred

• PMP certification.
• Delivering interconnection substations and gen tie lines for solar, wind, or battery energy storage projects.
• Overhead transmission line construction at 115 kV and above, including foundations, structures, and conductor stringing.
• Large generator interconnection agreements and utility construction agreements.
• Primavera P6 and enterprise project cost systems.
• Managing projects in an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) delivery model.

Physical Requirements and Work Conditions

• Constant seated or standing computer work, including sustained keyboard use.
• Frequent communication by phone, video, and in person.
• Frequent lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds; occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds.
• Occasional walking on uneven or remote terrain during substation and right of way visits.
• Occasional observation of work near energized substations and transmission lines.
• Required PPE at all times on site.
• Work is divided between a home office and substation sites, transmission rights of way, energized facilities, and vendor or utility facilities.
• Field conditions include heat, cold, rain, dust, high noise, and uneven or remote terrain along rights of way.
• Travel up to 35 percent, mainly to project sites, rights of way, utilities, and vendors.
