Senior Substation and Transmission Project Manager

FC Electric is hiring a Senior Substation and Transmission Project Manager to deliver the largest, most complex, and highest-risk substation and transmission projects in the portfolio. This person takes on projects with demanding clients, tight schedules, difficult routes, unusual contract terms, or major recovery needs, and is expected to bring them under control.

The role also helps strengthen the project management function through process improvement, estimating support, and mentoring. This is a remote-based role with travel up to 35 percent to project sites, rights of way, utilities, and vendors across the country.

What You Will Do

Complex Project Delivery

• Deliver the largest and most complex projects in the portfolio, including multi-station programs, long transmission and gen tie lines, aggressive energization dates, and recovery assignments.
• Develop the execution strategy for each project, including delivery method, sequencing, subcontracting approach, outage strategy, and resource plan.
• Manage the integrated schedule and critical path across engineering, permitting, right of way, procurement, construction, commissioning, and utility interfaces, and lead recovery when the schedule slips.

Risk and Relationships

• Lead risk identification and mitigation at the project and program level, covering supply chain, permitting, right of way and landowner issues, environmental restrictions, utility approval, weather, terrain, and labor availability.
• Serve as the senior FC Electric relationship owner for assigned clients, and lead escalated commercial and technical discussions.
• Lead coordination with interconnecting utilities and transmission owners on approvals, line and station outages, witness testing, and energization milestones.
• Work with land, environmental, and permitting partners to resolve right of way and access problems on complex line routes.

Process and Estimating

• Develop and improve project management processes, templates, reporting standards, and gate reviews.
• Support estimating and proposals for substation and transmission line work with execution insight, risk pricing, and realistic schedules.

Mentoring

• Mentor Project Managers and Project Coordinators, and provide input on their performance and advancement.

Safety Leadership

• Make safety part of every project decision, and shape scope, schedule, and budget so that working safely is realistic, not just a goal.
• Use stop work authority, and back anyone else who uses it, without hesitation.
• Follow site safety rules during substation and right of way visits, and take part in incident reviews on assigned projects.

What You Need

• Bachelor of Science in engineering, construction management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and hands on experience.
• Ten or more years managing substation, transmission line, or electric utility construction projects, including complex or high-value work.
• Delivery of projects to schedule and margin commitments, including at least one significant recovery or turnaround.
• Strong command of change management, entitlement, and claims avoidance.
• Understanding of substation and transmission line engineering, construction, and commissioning sufficient to lead a technical team credibly.
• Exceptional client facing communication, negotiation, and escalation judgment.
• Able to travel to project sites and rights of way and work safely around energized substations and transmission lines.

Preferred

• PMP certification.
• Delivering interconnection substations and transmission lines at 230 kV and above.
• Managing programs that combine substation and transmission line scopes.
• EPC contracting and owner furnished equipment arrangements.
• Resolving complex right of way, permitting, and environmental challenges on linear projects.
• Developing project management processes for a growing organization.

Physical Requirements and Work Conditions

• Constant seated or standing computer work, including sustained keyboard use.
• Frequent communication by phone, video, and in person.
• Frequent lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds; occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds.
• Occasional walking on uneven or remote terrain during substation and right of way visits.
• Occasional observation of work near energized substations and transmission lines.
• Required PPE at all times on site.
• Work is divided between a home office and substation sites, transmission rights of way, energized facilities, and vendor or utility facilities.
• Field conditions include heat, cold, rain, dust, high noise, and uneven or remote terrain along rights of way.
• Travel up to 35 percent, mainly to project sites, rights of way, utilities, and vendors.
