Lead Substation and Transmission Project Manager

FC Electric is hiring a Lead Substation and Transmission Project Manager to serve as a working leader on our project management team. You will manage a team of project managers and coordinators while also running a personal portfolio of substation and transmission line projects. The role sets how the team delivers work, decides who takes on which projects, develops the people on the team, and ensures every project meets the same standard for schedule, cost, and client results.

This is the first step from individual contributor into management, and it suits a proven project manager who is ready to lead others. It is a remote-based role with travel up to 35 percent to project sites, rights of way, utilities, and vendors across the country.

What You Will Do

Team Leadership

• Lead and supervise a team of project managers and project coordinators, usually two to six people.
• Assign substation and transmission projects according to complexity, risk, and each person's strengths and experience, and shift workloads as conditions change.
• Direct, develop, and evaluate the project managers on the team.

Delivery Standards and Process

• Set common standards for scheduling, permit and outage tracking, reporting, cost forecasting, and change management, and hold the team to them.
• Own the team's project management processes, templates, gate reviews, and reporting standards.
• Use lessons from post-project reviews to keep improving how the team works.

Personal Project Portfolio

• Manage a personal portfolio of substation and transmission line projects with full accountability for scope, schedule, cost, risk, quality, and client satisfaction, at the level expected of a Senior Project Manager.
• Control the integrated schedule and critical path across engineering, permitting, right of way, procurement, construction, commissioning, and utility milestones.

Commercial and Financial Management

• Own the commercial position of assigned projects, including change management and margin protection.
• Provide cost input for budgets covering design, right of way support, field labor, and material purchases.
• Bring execution experience and risk pricing into project estimates.

Cross Functional Coordination

• Partner with engineering, construction, commissioning, procurement, land and permitting, and finance leaders on resource planning and execution strategy.

Safety Leadership

• Make safety part of every project decision, and shape scope, schedule, and budget so that working safely is realistic, not just a goal.
• Use stop work authority, and back anyone else who uses it, without hesitation.
• Follow site safety rules during substation and right of way visits, and take part in incident reviews on assigned projects.

What You Need

• Bachelor of Science in engineering, construction management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and hands on experience.
• Twelve or more years managing substation, transmission line, or electric utility construction projects.
• At least three years leading, supervising, or formally mentoring other project managers.
• Proven delivery of complex substation and transmission projects that met schedule and margin commitments.
• Ability to set and enforce consistent delivery standards across a team.
• Strong command of change management, entitlement, and claims avoidance.
• Able to travel to project sites and rights of way and work safely around energized substations and transmission lines.

Preferred

• Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
• Leading a project management team in a growing organization.
• Generation interconnection portfolios that include substations and transmission lines at 230 kV and above.
• Resource planning, capacity forecasting, and utilization management.
• Implementing project controls systems.

Physical Requirements and Work Conditions

• Constant seated or standing computer work, including sustained keyboard use.
• Frequent communication by phone, video, and in person.
• Frequent lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds; occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds.
• Occasional walking on uneven or remote terrain during substation and right of way visits.
• Occasional observation of work near energized substations and transmission lines.
• Required PPE at all times on site.
• Work is divided between a home office and substation sites, transmission rights of way, energized facilities, and vendor or utility facilities.
• Field conditions include heat, cold, rain, dust, high noise, and uneven or remote terrain along rights of way.
• Travel up to 35 percent, mainly to project sites, rights of way, utilities, and vendors.
